Manton Dam Return to Service

To support our future water supply, the Darwin Region Water Supply Infrastructure Program identified the requirement to upgrade and refurbish existing infrastructure and identify new water storage and supply opportunities for the Northern Territory.

Stage one of the Program includes the return of Manton Dam to service as a drinking water source for the Darwin region. This $189 million project, jointly funded by the Australian and Northern Territory Governments is now underway and will supply an additional 7,300 megalitres of safe drinking water to Darwin region, per year.

The existing infrastructure at Manton Dam is being upgraded, including the refurbishment of the intake tower. The project will also see the delivery of a new pumping station, a state-of-the-art water treatment plant and a new 22km pipeline.

Construction works at Manton Dam commenced in July 2024 and the project is expected to be completed in mid-2026.

Manton Dam will remain a recreational resource for the Darwin community, with a new recreational management plan in development in consultation with the Department of Tourism and Hospitality’s Parks and Wildlife division. Power and Water will implement additional treatment measures to ensure the water pumped from Manton Dam meets stringent drinking water quality standards.
