Water efficiency
Water demand management is an important part of ensuring water security for all Territorians. The Northern Territory currently has the highest per-capita water consumption in Australia and, in many cases, uses twice as much as other parts of Australia with a similar climate.
As our population and economy grow over time, this places pressure on our existing public water supply systems. The Northern Territory Government, in partnership with the Power and Water Corporation, is working to support Territorians to reduce their water use and ensure there is enough water for the Territory now and into the future.
Government leading the way
Saving water is everyone’s responsibility and it's important that we lead the way. The Northern Territory Government's Water Demand Management Strategy outlines a whole-of-government approach to reducing agency water use.
We are working to support all agencies and departments to understand water use by holding engaging workshops to raise awareness and share practical tips that can support early leak detection and improve irrigation practices.
Water Efficiency Ambassadors and Site Water Efficiency Champions are established within 8 NT agencies to lead these efforts and promote water efficiency internally.

Living Water Smart
Living Water Smart is a Power and Water initiative helping communities across the Northern Territory reduce water use. The program helps Territorians become smarter with water use while continuing to support investment, manage growth and protect our water supply for the future.

That's My Water
Educating the next generation is key to ensuring we have enough water for our future. Power and Water partners with the Department of Education and Training to provide schools and students with water sustainability learning programs aligned to the Australian Curriculum.
