The importance of reporting water use
In 2024 to 2025, water licence holders submitted a total of 8,079 water meter readings to the department!
Meter readings are important for both licence holder and the department to understand how much water has been used and how much is still available.
By understanding how Territorians are using water, the department can assess the impact to the water resource in a timely manner and use the data to manage the Territory’s water resources effectively. Water usage by licence holders is essential in water resource planning, model calibrations and assessments of the state of the water resource.
Most water licences require licence holders to submit readings on a monthly basis. In the last financial year, an average of 95% of licence holders were compliant with their reporting conditions.
Just under half of those meter readings were completed using the My Metre App. The app not only provides a quick way to submit a meter reading but also allows licence holders to view their water history and regional water use data.
Unsure how to use the My Meter App? The department has made a helpful video to explain how to use it - available in English and Vietnamese. This can be found on the department's website, along with other information such as how to read a water meter. For more information go to the Northern Territory Government website.
Licence holders can still submit their meter readings to the Water Licensing and Regulation team via phone or email. You can reach the team on 08 8999 4455 or water.regulation@nt.gov.au.
